Amicale Culturelle Européenne

Have fun with ACE

Future members would obviously like to know what kind of activities the ACE presents to them and below you will have a little taster of our 2010 gatherings.

First of all there are always 3 recurrent events every year, i.e. the AGM, which we try to have in March to start off the year, we have the very popular “Bring a plate party” the last Sunday of July where all the members attending bring foods or cakes to what one could call a huge buffet lunch, and finally the annual Christmas lunch, always on a Saturday in December.

Although we all may think that we have been to Caen and know it well, our very interesting visit there proved us wrong! We all very much enjoyed the guided tour of the Château by Christine Bisson, a professional guide, whom the ACE is very lucky to have among its members and on the committee. A lovely lunch in the sunshine was followed by visits to both Abbeys in the afternoon.

Other enjoyable trips included a garden visit to the “Jardin botanique du Château de Vauville”, a 2h walk around Villedieu followed by lunch and guided tour in the afternoon, a guided tour of the “ hôtels particuliers ” of Valognes, and a fascinating visit to the lime kilns at Regnéville with a demonstration of how to make lime.

We try to do a trip over a weekend each year. In 2010 we went to Rouen taking advantage of the celebration of « L’Impressionism ». A day and overnight stay in Rouen, was followed by Giverney and Monet’s house the next day. The feedback from this trip was more than ecstatic.

In 2011 our “away” venue will be to Le Havre on 16/17 April.

The year’s final venue was a much appreciated visit to the Bavent pottery followed by a tour of Cabourg and finally High Tea at the Grand Hôtel in Cabourg with a reading of Proust. Who can ask for more???

Although venues and visits are decided at committee meetings, we very much would like members to suggest things to do. Also, should members know of lovely walks with nearby restaurants where we can gather for lunch, it would be nice to have these ideas put forward to us.

With the above, we hope that any reader would be tempted to join us at the ACE!
